What is Infrastructure as a Service?
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is a cloud computing service model that involves the delivery and management of computing resources over the internet. These computing resources typically consist of computers, servers, data storage spaces, network components, etc. IaaS is one of the three main categories of cloud computing services. The other two are Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS). Due to its primary focus on provisioning of hardware components, IaaS is also known as Hardware as a Service (HaaS).
Points to Remember
- Apart from hardware components, IaaS also offers additional policy-driven services that allow enterprises to achieve a greater degree of orchestration and automation. These services may include but are not limited to system monitoring, security, detailed billing, logging, workload management.
- IaaS can be extremely advantageous especially for small businesses. It eliminates the need to spend capital on various costs associated with setting up and managing an on-premise infrastructure. Furthermore, it is also suitable for organisations that are trying to test a product in its experimental phase.
